How to Train Your Dragon: an Introduction to its Dragons

The “How to Train Your Dragon” franchise, based on Cressida Cowell’s book series, has captured the hearts of audiences around the world with its endearing characters, breathtaking animation, and, of course, its diverse and fascinating dragons. From the very first film released in 2010 to the subsequent sequels and spin-offs, the series has introduced us to a wide array of dragons, each with its own unique traits and abilities. In this article, we’ll take a closer look at some of the most iconic dragons from the franchise.

Meet some of the dragons of the How To Train Your Dragon franchise:

1. Toothless (Night Fury): Toothless is undoubtedly the star of the series and Hiccup’s loyal companion. Night Furies are known for their incredible speed, agility, and the ability to shoot explosive fire blasts. Despite their fearsome reputation, Toothless is a gentle and intelligent dragon, which challenges the stereotype that Vikings had about dragons.

2. Stormfly (Deadly Nadder): Astrid’s faithful companion, Stormfly, is a Deadly Nadder. These dragons are characterised by their sharp spines, excellent aim, and the ability to shoot spikes from their tail. Stormfly’s vibrant blue colour and strong-willed personality make her a fan favourite.

3. Meatlug (Gronckle): Fishlegs’ beloved Gronckle, Meatlug, may not be the fastest or most agile dragon, but they make up for it with incredible strength and a nearly indestructible hide. Gronckles are also known for their ability to consume rocks and minerals, which they use to create explosive lava blasts.

4. Hookfang (Monstrous Nightmare): Snotlout’s Monstrous Nightmare, Hookfang, lives up to its name with its fiery breath and intimidating appearance. These dragons are known for their powerful flames and the ability to ignite themselves, making them formidable in battle.

5. Barf and Belch (Hideous Zippleback): The twins Ruffnut and Tuffnut share this unique dragon, which consists of two heads with distinct personalities. The Hideous Zippleback has two types of breath attacks: gas and sparks. The combination of these elements can create explosive results.

6. Thornado (Thunderdrum): Stoick the Vast’s dragon, Thornado, is a Thunderdrum, known for its ability to create sonic blasts using its massive tail fin. These dragons are water-loving and can create whirlpools, making them a force to be reckoned with in the sea.

7. Cloudjumper (Stormcutter): Valka’s dragon, Cloudjumper, is a majestic Stormcutter. These dragons are known for their intelligence and the ability to fly in any direction, even backward. They also have the unique ability to manipulate their many wings into formidable weapons.

8. Light Fury: Introduced in the sequel, “How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World,” the Light Fury is a subspecies of the Night Fury. She is sleek, white, and possesses the ability to disappear amidst bursts of plasma. The Light Fury becomes Toothless’s love interest, adding a new layer of complexity to the story.

9. Red Death: The Red Death is the terrifying and colossal antagonist in the first “How to Train Your Dragon” movie. This dragon is a monstrous, fire-breathing behemoth, unlike any other in the series. The Red Death rules over the dragon nest and is responsible for terrorising the Viking island of Berk. Its sheer size and destructive power make it a formidable adversary.

10. Bewilderbeast: This massive, ice-breathing dragon serves as the antagonist in “The Hidden World.” The Bewilderbeast is the Alpha dragon, capable of controlling other dragons through its sheer size and power.

These are just a few of the many dragons that populate the rich and imaginative world of “How to Train Your Dragon.” The franchise has not only entertained audiences with its captivating story but also imparted valuable lessons about friendship, acceptance, and the importance of understanding those who may seem different. The dragons, in particular, remind us that appearances can be deceiving, and beneath every intimidating exterior may lie a heart of gold, ready to soar alongside us on epic adventures.
